The freehold of the city originated in a compact between three factions. A band of Summer Fae and a band of Winter Fae arrived in the area in the 1890s, looking for a place to establish an eternal court of their season. They squabbled and got nasty. Eventually, an old Autumnal lord (the Scarecrow King) took the leaders of the two bands aside, and made them quit their fighting. The leaders entered into the Compact of Bridgeberry in 1907, which was adopted as their Freehold name as well. It was established as a rotating seasonal court, but the Autumn and Spring were not equally represented. The Autumn King demanded his tithe of one month. As he frightened the other two leaders, they quickly acquiesced. The Spring was also granted a month to be transitional. However, the Spring monarch was given lesser powers, and was a puppet of the others, there for ceremony and to ease the transition.

The last 100 years has seen a slow dwindling of the bands. The old have slowly died or were taken. Privateers and Keepers have raided a number of times. However, things ticked along. The summer and winter kings managed to stay constant, the Autumn king was always the Scarecrow King, though as the Scarecrow King is masked it is unclear whether there is one or more of them. The Spring King changed often.

The courts are in turmoil. A new Spring King has stepped up, one who wishes to see spring an equal to the others. The Winter King is waining, retreating from the world. Most troubling of all, the Summer King Zacharias Elagabalus was brutally killed by something on the Fallen Hunt in October 2007. Change is finally coming to Bridgeberry. Whether it can survive it is questionable.
